The theme for the Christmas assembly for 2018 is ‘Hope and Friendship’. To illustrate this, I collected some of Shakespeare’s famous and most uplifting quotes to make a poem for our children. In the past year, Miss Stone has triumphantly engaged the school with poetry and ‘Hear my soul speak…’ was mostly motivated as a response to this. I asked Year 5 and 6 children to help me make the video and we were able to put it together very quickly. Their performance makes the meaning of each line so rich and they communicate the message of hope so beautifully.
For several years, Year 5 have focussed on Shakespeare in the Autumn term. The children take part in acting workshops based around one of Shakespeare’s plays and then see a performance at the Millfield Theatre. In the summer of 2017, I wrote to the actor and director Sir Kenneth Branagh, to tell him about our school. He has performed in many of Shakespeare’s plays on stage and screen, and I felt he would appreciate knowing what the children learn. My letter went on a very strange journey. It took about 6 months for it to reach Ken, and about another 6 months until he was able to write back. (He is currently filming ‘Artemis Fowl’ for Disney, amongst many other projects.)
However, his response was AMAZING.
He was very enthused by our school and was inspired that at Wilbury we aim to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. I will share this video with him and hope it continues to enthuse all who watch it.
Isn’t it it wonderful that words written hundreds of years ago continue to inspire and delight us?
‘Hear my soul speak…’ is dedicated to our exceptional community.
