Our Cultural Celebration

Our Cultural Celebration was a huge success.

Children, staff and parents and carers were welcomed onto the field by a rousing beat played on African Drums. Mrs. Wise lead us through all of the varied events. We opened with a song - a Wilbury favourite - 'Together'. It's a song that celebrates our community spirit so was an essential 'must' for proceedings. The West End came to our field too as our Elite Dance Troupe treated us to a routine from 'Matilda'. They were all definitely stars in the making! Next up was our Cultural Parade. Children had been asked to attend school wearing clothes that reflected their cultural identity. The field was a sea of vibrant, exciting colour. Staff and parents and carers dressed to impress too.

As our children paraded - class by class - they waved flags and held banners that they had made to add an extra special element to their promenade. There were cheers, chanting and laughter and it was such a spectacle of joy. The Year 5 and 6 choir sang 'Aye Mojinumba' accompanied by our African Drum band and conducted by the brilliant Mr. Roberts.  'Aye Mojinumba' comes from Nigeria. It is sung as a welcoming song to the surrounding villagers who have come to assist with the harvest, re-thatching or re-plastering of their dwellings. It means “Welcome to my village; you are now part of my village; we are all one village.” It was so appropriate for our cultural celebration and said so much about Wilbury.

Our Governor, Katie Bonham-Carter, presented some of our children with the prestigious Governor Awards. Deserved riches for working so hard and reflecting the very best of our values - respect, resilience, responsibility and kindness - to achieve such success. Some light relief followed with teachers and pupils competing in teams in an egg-cellent egg and spoon race. It was fiercely competitive with Mrs. Price and Mr. Adak winning with their egg-squisite skills!

Finally, we wished Wilbury a Happy 70th Birthday. 70 years of our wonderful, determined and defiant school. Children were treated to a very special slice of birthday cake when they returned to class to continue the party indoors! As we prepared to leave the field, we were encouraged by Mrs. Wise to look around at our beautiful, triumphant community.

Our collective culture is our unbreakable bond, and our diversity is our unbeatable strength.
