Summer Term
As we move into the summer term, the children in Reception are now confident learners who are increasingly independent and ready to build on all they have achieved this year. This is a key time as they prepare for the transition into Year 1, continuing to develop their skills across all areas of learning.
At this stage of the year, children are expected to show greater independence in choosing and completing activities, working collaboratively with their peers, and sustaining their focus for longer periods. Many children will be applying their phonics knowledge to read simple sentences and write short phrases, as well as developing confidence with numbers, counting, and simple problem-solving.
Our learning this term will continue to explore the theme of growth and change, with a special focus on life cycles. The children will have the exciting opportunity to observe real-life changes as we welcome caterpillars and eggs into the classroom. They will watch as caterpillars transform into butterflies and chicks hatch from eggs, giving them a hands-on understanding of how living things grow and change.
Through this topic, children will:
- Observe and talk about changes over time
- Use a growing range of vocabulary linked to life cycles and growth
- Develop their understanding of living things and their environments
- Record their observations through drawings, labels, and simple sentences
Alongside this, we will continue to strengthen the children’s phonics, reading, writing, and mathematical skills, ensuring they are well prepared for the next stage of their learning journey. Activities will remain engaging, practical, and play-based, while encouraging children to take more ownership of their learning.
You can support your child at home by:
- Encouraging reading and practising phonics regularly
- Talking about changes in the natural world, especially in the summer months
- Supporting simple writing tasks such as labels, captions, or short sentences
- Promoting independence with everyday routines
We are looking forward to a busy and exciting summer term, full of discovery, independence, and memorable experiences as the children continue to grow and flourish.
Spring Term
The children have settled back into school well and are ready to learn. They have been actively engaged in learning new mathematical concepts, such as making numbers up to 5 and understanding that numbers are part of a whole. As the spring term progresses, the children will continue to develop their number knowledge, begin exploring addition and subtraction through practical activities, and apply their maths skills in everyday situations.
They are doing extremely well in phonics, growing in confidence with recognising sounds, blending to read words, and beginning to write simple words and sentences. The children will also continue to develop their fine motor skills, independence, and confidence in expressing their ideas through speaking, writing, and creative activities. They are very enthusiastic and look forward to starting PE this half term, where they will further develop their physical skills, coordination, and teamwork.
Autumn Term
The children in Reception have settled in beautifully and are now well into their daily routine. They have shown themselves to be enthusiastic learners and curious explorers, eager to engage with the world around them. It has been wonderful to see them building strong relationships with both their peers and the adults in our setting. The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning and playing in both our indoor and outdoor environments.
