British Science Week Virtual Workshop

As part of British Science Week, our students participated in an exciting virtual workshop, engaging in hands-on investigations that encouraged curiosity, problem-solving, and scientific thinking. Each year group tackled a unique challenge designed to inspire a love of learning and exploration.
Nursery and Reception children delved into the fascinating world of light and shadows, inspired by The Gruffalo’s Child. They investigated how shadows are formed and experimented with ways to change their size, sparking their creativity and understanding of basic physics.
Year 1 and Year 2 put their scientific skills to the test to help Little Red Riding Hood stay dry on her journey through the forest. Through hands-on exploration, they experimented with different materials to discover which ones could make her hood waterproof—learning key concepts about absorption and material properties.
Year 3 and Year 4 explored friction and motion by investigating how different surfaces affect the movement of a cylindrical object—a bottle. Their challenge was to modify the surface to make the bottle roll the shortest possible distance, deepening their understanding of forces in action.
Year 5 and Year 6 took on an engineering challenge, designing and building a ‘Marble Maze’ using only the materials provided. Their goal was to create a path that would allow the marble to roll as slowly as possible from top to bottom without stopping. This tested their problem-solving skills, patience, and understanding of gravity and motion.
It was an inspiring and engaging experience for all our students, helping them develop a deeper appreciation for science through fun and interactive learning. We look forward to continuing to foster their curiosity and enthusiasm for STEM subjects in the future!
