Our Key Curriculum Drivers
Language development and reading are our curriculum drivers, and thread through our provision in all subject areas.
Language Development
At Wilbury, we focus on language development, in all its forms, with a clear emphasis on building vocabulary in every lesson and developing oracy and speaking through consistently high-quality adult-child interactions. Our aim is for our children to become confident communicators, able to articulate their thoughts and opinions with clarity and precision.
Our vision for Oracy at Wilbury is for talk to be used as a tool for success in every lesson; to build a community of learners who are both confident and articulate; for all children to be effective listeners who are able challenge one and other’s ideas with kindness. Oracy aims to increase the confidence, fluency and eloquence of your child, which in turn will raise aspirations, progress and standards. Oracy will assist progression and enable your children to take their place confidently in our fast changing, challenging and competitive world.
Reading
Reading is central for us, and one of our key curriculum drivers. We know successful readers will lead to successful learners.
At Wilbury, our teaching of early reading and phonics (RWI) is of a consistently high-quality and we have developed our own highly effective reading programme which is domain-driven, using high-quality, diverse, purposeful texts. We aim to foster a love of reading in all our children, across the curriculum, and through daily story-time, with carefully chosen books, inviting book areas, beautiful and well stocked libraries, author visits, story-cafés, reading assemblies and much more.
We use every minute of every day to develop their love and grasp of reading, language, vocabulary, and oracy because we know if we can teach them to read, and communicate with confidence, they will excel and be able to make the most of everything life has to offer them.
