We have a very strong commitment to the teaching of phonics and early reading at Wilbury. 

We follow the validated systematic synthetic phonics programme Read, Write Inc. from Reception to year 2 to teach children to learn letter sounds and blend them together to read words. The children are regularly assessed and grouped according to their levels, which enables teaching to be focused to meet their needs very specifically.  Gaps in sounds knowledge are identified through assessment and addressed immediately. Children who need extra support to keep up receive one to one tuition daily. Phonics also takes place in Key Stage 2 to support those children who still need focused phonics teaching. Read Write Inc routines are taught from Autumn Term in Nursery, and in the final term of Nursery, all children begin to learn sounds based on the Read Write Inc programme. Formal phonics sessions take place daily from the start of Reception.

Staff are experts in teaching phonics, and receive regular high quality training, both internally and externally from our RWI consultant.
