At Wilbury, we have a very strong commitment to the teaching of phonics and early reading.

We follow the validated systematic synthetic phonics programme Read, Write Inc. from Reception to year 2 to teach children letter sounds and to blend them together to read words. The children are regularly assessed and grouped according to their levels, which enables teaching to be focused to meet their needs very specifically.  

Gaps in sounds knowledge are identified through assessment and addressed immediately. We focus on helping children 'keep up, not catch up'. If a child needs extra help, they receive immediate, targeted support from our expert staff. 

We provide tailored support for children joining mid-year, and pupils with additional learning needs. Where older pupils require further support with decoding, we provide structured phonics teaching and targeted intervention. This ensures that all pupils develop the foundations necessary to become fluent, confident readers.

Staff are experts in teaching phonics, and receive regular high quality training, both internally from our phonics leaders, and externally from our RWI consultant.
